Eternal, Mythical: The Story of French White Oak

France is a leading player in European timber production. It has been managing its diversified forests for many centuries, both ecologically and economically. French forests are constantly expanding and at the center of it all is the French White Oak.

French White Oak has stood as a symbol of strength for more than 2,000 years. Across the French countryside, they are like the monarchs of the forests, providing invaluable ecological support to all of their fellow subjects who dwell within their realm. It’s no surprise that for centuries, French White Oak has been harvested and transformed into everything from barns, which have withstood multiple lifetimes of harsh weather, to the hand-carved ornate furniture of the French royal family at Versailles.

Today, French White Oak is the choice of fine cabinet makers, joiners, renowned interior designers and architects. It is often used to create beautiful, high performance, hardwood flooring, ideal for high traffic areas such as hallways, living rooms and kitchens. It is similarly favoured as the centerpiece beam in period restorations, or to add charm to a new property. French White Oak is also very much in demand in wine barrel production, due to its density and stability, which preserves what’s held inside.

Speaking of preservation, France is a proud member of PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), the largest forest certification system worldwide, covering more than 300 million hectares of woodlands. During the last 50 years, French forests have increased by 35% while at the same time maintaining their biological diversity—providing real proof that sustainable forestation is indeed possible and can result in increased forest sizes, as it has in France.

Khayeri French White Oak flooring continues this proud tradition. Incredibly strong, yet quietly elegant, versatile and long-lasting, Khayeri French White Oak floor, when properly cared for, will last a lifetime—making it both a beautiful and ecologically sound choice.

The Ground Upon Which Holidays Stand

What is it that makes holidays the spectacles that they are? What is it that brings us together in a spirit of generosity, friendship and altruism? It may seem plain enough, but the reason we all descend—or ascend—into childlike delight when the holidays come round is the very same thing that they are all about: family, and all the memories they bring with them.

You gather, exchange stories, recollect memories and plan for the future—it’s the same thing every year, but it’s always different. You open your home up to those who matter most in your life. You invite them in.

It is precisely this moment that Khayeri strives to capture, enhance and instill wonder in. The moment family arrives. Khayeri’s floors are a product of age-old beauty and delicate respect—an homage to where they come from. They are more than floors, they are centrepieces, like an ornate vase on a table or a profound work of art hanging off a wall. Khayeri’s floors bring their memories with them, memories of distant lands and ancient times. They are meant to inspire and add personality; be a talking point, adding warmth and bringing a home together.

Isn’t that what the holidays are all about? A celebration of times past and being together once again? It goes to show the level of thought that Khayeri puts into his products. His floors are more than ground you walk on. They are the foundations of a home. And home is the ground upon which holidays stand.

Project Feature: The Lakefront Cottage

2019 had just begun – it was a week old – and our client knew what she wanted. She was undergoing a major gut renovation for her lakefront home: she had her vision and plans set out previously and had been to plenty of other flooring suppliers in the city but had not found the right floors that met her needs nor concerns. It was towards the end of that first week in 2019, when she was referred to Khayeri Flooring by one of the city’s prominent and renowned leading kitchen suppliers.

On her first visit to the showroom she had brought a sample of the kitchen cabinet that she had intended to use, her iPad Pro and her notebook filled with detailed notes, measurements and project execution timelines. Our client knew that in order for her to find the right hardwood floors for her project she has to provide as much details as possible. During the first 45 minutes of her visit, she patiently answered the Khayeri Flooring Showroom Consultant’s questions, at the end of which, two challenges became clear: the Design Challenge and the Durability Challenge.

The task was to modernize the lakefront home but keep certain elements intact to portray heritage and authenticity; to make the best of the view by incorporating the existing beautiful old trees into the design. Our client already had a vision of her kitchen in mind and was certain that the floors were equally as important in the grand scheme of design.

She was also fully conscious of the environmental challenges that the location of her home would present. Located on Balsam Lake, it being a water-front property, and the severity of the winters witnessed in that area, all gave her major concerns on how her floors would perform.

Khayeri’s solution was an understanding, innovative and insightful one. Choosing the Memories of Versailles’ 300 Year Old Reclaimed Series, with Baltic Marine Grade Birch for superior structural stability and dimensional integrity in the forces of expansion and contraction, and a manufacturing process that used Dry Kerning, Khayeri installed reclaimed French While Oak across the 2,300 sq. ft. of space. He followed it up with frequent inspection meetings to ensure site and sub-floor conditions met the internationally accepted standards.

Two challenges overcome with one product. That’s genius in design.

Project Feature: The Vineyard Farmhouse Residence

Married for 35 years, our clients turned a southern revival style vineyard farmhouse into their dream home – a lifestyle choice and massive project in which Khayeri was heavily involved. 300-year-old reclaimed wood from France laid the foundations of a home that was welcoming and warm, light and bright, adding a touch of nostalgia and a great deal of inspiration.

When asked how the couple, long time residents of the GTA, discovered Khayeri and why they chose them, their answer was a simple one: “there was no recommendation, or anything, we just did our own research and found Khayeri online. We liked the look of the floors… we met with Mehran personally and were very impressed. There was just something that drew us to those floors.”

It was this initial meeting that set the tone for future interactions. Both agreed that Khayeri was there “every step of the way.” “We were always in loop, they updated us regularly and we knew we were dealing with 300-year-old reclaimed wood from France, so it was a big deal getting it here. We always felt that we were up-to-date.”

Khayeri flooring has long held the belief that the genius is in the design; the right process – what is known as the Khayeri Journey – is key to letting the wood speak for itself. Our inspiration is taken, maintained and left to roam free when its finally relocated. And our clients agree. When talking about why they chose the Khayeri floor they did, they said, “It was a no brainer, it’s like linen. It’s so versatile. It can take on so many different styles. And then there’s the therapeutic feel you get when you walk on it.”

Now complete, looking back at the Khayeri process, product and service, they have one thing to say: “Whenever we have people over, everyone comments on the floors — more than anything else in the house — they always compliment us on the floors. But you know what? Even if they didn’t, we wouldn’t care. We love these floors so much!”

This is the Khayeri difference. Helping turn a southern revival style vineyard farmhouse into a couple’s dream home, one plank of sustainable wood at a time.

Product Feature – Scandinavia: Copenhagen

Copenhagen – Scandinavia as a whole – has a way of drawing you in. You spend a day there, then a week, then maybe two, and at the end of it you forget that you’re a tourist. For as long as you are allowed the pleasant reverie, you think of yourself as a local.

blank

Copenhagen is a tapestry of elements at once beautiful and functional: elegantly symmetrical historic palaces, thoughtfully designed modernist architecture, street side cafes and community-focused public spaces. Locals swim in the pristine waters of the city harbor, friends converse along benches – everybody seems to be smiling. And yet despite the energy and vibrancy, the beauty and livability, Mehran Khayeri keeps his eyes lowered, studying the ground beneath it all. This is his journey.

Enjoying an espresso and perfectly crusted sourdough bun, the minimalist ambiance of the cafes exposed brick walls, thin wood surfaces, and smooth beige flooring lends a pleasant sense of calm. Walking along the city’s perpetually curving streets, the stream of bricks along the floor bending like flowing water, Khayeri feels his thoughts – like himself – begin to drift comfortably. The simplistic environment has a powerful effect.

Deciding to lunch amongst the vibrancy and energy of the harbours of Nyhavn, Khayeri strolls along the boardwalk and is caught by the shimmering beauty of the brightly coloured townhouses across the canal being reflected in the water. It creates an impression both ethereal and expansive, one that sends his mind spinning with inspiration.

Inspired by his travels through Norway and Denmark, Khayeri brings the distinctly Scandinavian affinity for minimalism and functionality to his Memories of Scandinavia line. Demonstrating a uniquely seamless design with sanded smooth flooring and signature no beveling, this line creates an effortless sense of balance that is both timeless and beautiful. Combining the sophistication of wide plank flooring with lightly brushed colours and two-tone design, Scandinavian serenity reigns supreme here – laying the groundwork for a transitional or contemporary sleek home.

Product Feature – Reclaimed

blank

At one point in history, a certain Louis XIII turned a humble two-story hunting lodge a few kilometres southwest of Paris into a chateau. Years later, his successor, Louis XIV decided more was needed. So bit by bit, year after year, rooms and wings and terraces were added, art and trophies were hung, and the gardens were enlarged. It became more than a place for quiet reverie. It turned into a place of ceremony, a place to entertain; it turned into a palais at Versailles.

As the nobility’s taste grew richer, the Palace of Versailles grew too. When the French Revolution came and the nobility went, the palace still stood. Now, with a country’s history etched into stone and marble, it stands as a museum. Now, representing the rise and fall of an era, perhaps, spectres of bygone residents still roam the halls at Versailles.

While you’re looking for the perfect Rustic style flooring for your space, you come across term “reclaimed” throughout your search. What is a “reclaimed wood floor” you may wonder? Here’s everything you need to know about reclaimed wood.

The Journey of Curating Historic French White Oak by Khayeri Flooring

blank
blank

Rich in history, reclaimed wood is wood that has been used for buildings and structures from the 18th to the early 20th century. Reclaimed wood is recycled and reused to meet today’s ever-growing need for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.

Today’s reclaimed wood emerges from a time when wood was in abundance, both in North America and Europe, and was used as a principal building material.

The preservation of our beautiful environment is what the Khayeri Flooring brand stands for. Khayeri’s use of reclaimed wood is just one of the many sustainable initiatives we have implemented into our practices.

Reclaimed harwood floors have become a growing popular, and luxurious rustic design element used for commercial spaces. Aged reclaimed wood is very durable and is particularly suitable for high-traffic areas due its tight grain. This makes the material more resistant and hard-wearing, than newly harvested wood.

White Oak is a popular choice for reclaimed wood in Europe due to its abundance. Featuring a true artisanal hand-finish that embodies the aged, rustic sensibilities of a storied French manor, the Reclaimed Series features three-hundred-year-old European White Oak sourced from rare historic chateaus, farm houses, public buildings, and rail roads throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

A reclaimed wooden floor makes a bold and luxurious statement. As well as demonstrates immaculate taste and a love for the natural character of wood. Not only does it exude great taste in design, but it also shows your commitment to environmental matters.

Worship the ground you walk in and enjoy modern luxury while embracing cherished history in your design with Khayeri Flooring.

DID YOU KNOW? – When to Order?

blank

Did you know that typically engineered wood floors, due to their custom-manufacturing nature need to be ordered and installed before your kitchen?

Engineered wood flooring is structurally more stable than solid wood. While this translates into reduced shrinking and expanding (making it easier to install and maintain), you still do need to install your floors before the kitchen.
This is to ensure the wood has room to breathe.

Since our wood is custom-manufactured to your specifications, it needs to be installed first to account for the demands placed on it and to let it settle comfortably into the floor. With over 17 years of experience with multi-unit and high-end custom residential projects, Khayeri Flooring knows that design starts from the ground up.
